* Your new puppy has been started on premium dry puppy food. We use Canidae All Live Stages. I have found that buying a premium food is actually less expensive because there is less filler and more nutrition in every bite. Thus, your puppy will eat less and grow better than if you were to feed a “discount” brand. Compare different brands here. Puppies have little tummies and will do best on several small meals each day. Remember, changes in diet must be made gradually!
* Because Dachshunds can develop back problems as they age, instead of using a collar for walks, invest in a harness to use with a leash.
* Although not mandatory, a properly sized pet carrier or kennel will help with housebreaking and give your new puppy a place of his own.
*Don’t forget to keep your new puppy’s nails trimmed, clean puppy’s ears, and handle all parts of your new puppy, nose to tail, regularly so he is used to being touched. This will help de-stress visits to the veterinarian!
* Your new puppy has had age appropriate shots before you took him home. Information is provided in your new puppy packet. Don’t forget to schedule the rest of the series with your veterinarian, and spay or neuter when your puppy is 9-12 months old! Discuss flea and tick and heartworm prevention with your veterinarian.
*Socialize your puppy! Provide your puppy many varied positive experiences with new people, places, and situations while he or she is growing into a well-adjusted, well-mannered dog.
